Mark Morford on the StupidFilter →
OMG! ROTFLMAO DOOOOOOOOD! Um, yes, Mark hits all the right notes again.  A good if somewhat troubling read. StupidFilter. An idea whose time has come.

Saturday coffee, gender and race, and the...
Race and gender, race and gender, so much of what I hear regarding the 2008 election is about race and gender. I’m voting for Obama, (duh) and my choice has nothing to do with his race or gender. He’s clearly and blatantly the most qualified person for the awful job of president who has ever had a real chance of winning in my lifetime. I’m voting against McC@nt, having nothing...

space madness
there’s a kid at our show last night in a shiny crushed tinfoil jacket he made out of some kind of 70’s space capsule tape, and a hairstyle we agreed was a “mohawk dreadlocks” hybrid affair. best dressed award, for sure. if i find a picture, i’ll post it. he made the Phenomenauts look like Earth people.  he and his pals Suz Z Q and Lauren are two time skanking...

Our most esteemed Band Geek, aka Adam Beach, sax guru and resident musicologist for the Uptones, posted this vid as a comment on our band’s myspace page. Now, I’m not a dad, nor do I stay at home much, but I know a good song when I hear it =) Stay At Home Dad by Jon Lajoie is a gem for our time. To all my stay at home dad friends, and not stay at home dad friends, and mommies at home...

I have lately been telling my more pessimistic friends, whenever they say they think McC@nt could win, to donate twenty bucks to Obama’s campaign instead of whining. Or volunteer at MoveOn or Obama’s campaign or put up a sign or bloody bumper sticker or all of the above. Can’t take this presidential election for granted. This video from Eli Pariser breaks it down well. No whining, just...

Why Do Band Sites Suck So Much? →
“Why is it that the music industry and the web have had such a terrible relationship for so long? It seems to be a kind of trickle down effect. Recording industry leaders never had a clue what to do with the medium, so they hired like minded people to implement web initiatives. In turn these toadies hired designers and developers that wanted to create “experiences” that ended up...

Reading "When I Grow up: A Memoir"
Juliana Hatfield’s new book. Always liked her songs, turns out she’s an entertaining writer, with an interesting take on the whole rock star drama, by turns amusing, inspiring and depressing. Her first band, the Blake Babies, was one of the coolest things to come out of the very fertile Boston “alternative” rock scene. They were so sweet and sincere and unpolluted by...

hmmm
You know, I like that bass playing kitty so much, I almost want to retire my blog right here, and leave it at that.  Have you ever wondered how many abandoned blogs there are out there? Or how many web sites from 1999 that say “check back soon for updates” have not been updated since Britney was a Mouseketeer? It’s all so lovely. I read that there are something like 75,000 new...

The Legendary Troggs Tape →
Poor Troggs. After scoring an international number one hit with their cover of Chip Taylor’s “Wild Thing,” the Troggs greatest notoriety came from this fly on the wall recording of them having a band meltdown in the studio. Legend has it this was their last attempt at recording, and it’s not hard to see why.  As band drama goes, this is the cream.  Spinal Tap was based on...

Happy B-Day Barack Obama →
Funny, I was just on facebook, looking at some friends’ pages, went to Obama’s page, saw he was born August 4, 1964. Another Leo. Our birthdays are three days and one year apart. Somehow this pleases me. Plus, he lists his interests as reading and writing and loafing with his kids. In the great scheme of things politically, I don’t know how much it matters to like someone who is...

Oooooh Oh, The Guns Of Brooklyn →
This is probably the best Clash cover ever. What a great vocal by Santogold, out of, you guessed it, Brooklyn. I love everything I’ve heard from her so far. Great to hear such a brilliant singer matched with spot on, up to the minute production rooted in dub and punk. You know that’s catnip to me.
